All Members,

SUB : Terror attacks at 'all-time high' as study finds world is becoming more violent
Ref : Global peace deteriorating as world violence hits new all-time high
1. Great Powers Face to Face
Just like during the first two world wars, where two power blocks faced one another, the United States, Russia, and China are challenging one another on the military field. In Syria, the Bashar al-Assad regime is supported by the Russians and its military is trained in China, while the Americans are helping the rebels. Plus, confrontation such as this is taking place elsewhere on the planet.
2. Shiites against Sunni
The wars in Syria and Iraq put Islam’s two main branches in opposition. The Shiites, led by Iran, face the Sunni, led by Saudi Arabia. The first are supported by Russia and the second by the United States, the world’s two biggest nuclear armies.
3. Tensions in Chinese Waters
In Asia, could a war be possible between China, which is claiming uninhabited islands, and allies of the United States? At stake are the incalculable underground oil reserves and transport of half of their supertankers. This would ensure the energy security of China or that of its neighbors such as the Philippines, Taiwan, Malaysia, Vietnam, Brunei… in most cases supported by the United States.
4. The Invasion of Iraq
George W. Bush himself used the expression “third world war” to describe the invasion of Iraq by the American army. In the future, will we mark the start of the Third World War by the attack led by the younger Bush… or the Gulf War started by his father in 1990?
5. Intercontinental Conflict
Like the first two world wars, the war against ISIS is taking place on all continents. The terrorist group is attacking around the world, with an intensity that few army groups have ever before deployed. And many countries have joined together to fight ISIS, on home soil and in Syria and Iraq, giving the fight a global dimension
6. Logic of Destruction
For ISIS and for the Allies, there is just one goal: destroying the enemy. That goal is not always specifically sought during battle, but it’s certainly this logic that led to the two world wars. The Nazis wanted to destroy a part of humanity. As for the Allies, they annihilated the Nazi regime, whose ideology is now prohibited in several countries.
7. Crimea Hanging in the Balance
Russia and Ukraine are still in a strained situation. The question of Crimea, annexed by Russia, hasn’t been resolved. The Russian army continues to strengthen its military presence there. Why? The first two world wars erupted over questions of territory claimed by both sides.
8. Aggressive Leaders
On all continents, countries are run by leaders who have no qualms about threatening their neighbors. Putin in Russia as well as Kim Jong-un in North Korea seem ready to do anything to sustain their ambitions. From one provocation to the next, where will their logic lead these armies?
9. The American Dynamic
Eight years after George W. Bush left the White House; will American voters once more give politicians reason to indulge in hawkish one-upmanship? The rise of Donald Trump and his victory in the Republican primaries reflect growing radicalization in the American electorate. Will it cause a new war?
10. Countries Descended into Anarchy
The Arab Spring transformed several countries, with some turning toward a structural democracy, like Tunisia, and others toward military dictatorship, like Egypt… and some others falling into total anarchy, like Libya and Syria. In these last two countries, the war is raging every day and no one knows when or how it will end nor to which neighboring countries the war might spread.
11. Territorial Appetite
The first two world wars were fed by the territorial ambitions of a few heads of state. Today, territories are claimed by countries with military superpowers, like Russia in Ukraine, or China over Taiwan and Chinese waters.
12. The Weakness of International Organizations
The League of Nations, which preceded the United Nations, was unable to prevent the Second World War. Today, the UN seems overrun by the conflicts devastating Africa and the Middle East. Simply take note that the Human Rights Commission for the UN is composed notably of China, Russia, and Saudi Arabia.
13. The USSR Replaced
Since Ronald Reagan’s Star Wars initiative and the inability of the Soviets to keep up with the ambitious American military program, the United States had no more rival on that front. Yet, from here on in, China has positioned itself in direct competition with Uncle Sam, thanks to its growing economy and the technology it acquired over the last few years. If the Cold War was sometimes called the third world war, could the technological and military confrontation between China and the United States herald a fourth world war, also a cold one?
14. The War on Oil
Some economists and historians state that the first two world wars were motivated by an appetite for energy – especially oil – from the participating countries. Since the Gulf War in 1990, many countries have clearly displayed their willingness to ensure their oil supply, even using military means, like the United States has been doing.
15. Record Weapon Sales
The year of 2016 will set a new record for weapon sales on the planet. This year, there will be over $100 billion in weapons sales... It’s the first time this amount has been reached. It represents an increase of over 6% in one year.
16. A Spatial War
The Second World War largely involved the air, with the introduction of military aviation. The Cold War took place in space, with the conquest of the Moon and use of military satellites. Currently, it’s perhaps the conquest of the first inhabitable planet that will decide the next world war, as a result of the resources it could bring to the country that will colonize it.
17. The Rise of the Extreme Right
In Europe, and also on other continents, extreme right parties are gaining in popularity with the electorate. Some compare the rise to that which preceded the Second World War, pointing out the risk that nationalism and identity politics are bringing up old quarrels, with the threat that the situation will worsen.
18. The Invisible War
Is the third world war actually going on without us knowing it? With the advent of the Internet, attacks are now happening online. And although we might have the impression that the digital war doesn’t claim any victims, the theft of military secrets could have consequences as large as a battle on the ground.
29. Indifference in the face of Violence
Like the European democracies toward Hitler, are our present democracies giving too much ground to warlike leaders? The Munich Agreement, signed in 1938 between the United Kingdom, France, Italy, and Germany gave the Nazis confidence in their project to take over Europe. Don’t the present negotiations involving Ukraine, Syria, and Libya risk having the most hawkish believe they have a free hand?
20. Unprecedented Hope
Yet, if the third world war has started, it is noteworthy that never in the history of humanity have leaders had as many opportunities to discuss and negotiate with each other. And the people have never had as much weight when it comes to avoiding or stopping war.
