A seven-year-old girl was kidnapped from Guwahati on Thursday afternoon and was rescued by police in less than 15 hours. Six people have been arrested in this connection. Adishree, daughter of doctor couple Diganta Dutta and Ameenakshi Dutta, was found before she was supposed to be handed over to another group for ransom.

According to police, Adishree was alone at home when she was taken out of their Jayanagar apartment around 12.45 pm by their housemaid Rumi Das. The maid was appointed just 20 days back. It was only after two hours that her parents found her missing along with the help. Police then managed to track her down in a village about 80 km away and rescued her safely.

“We have taken six people into custody, including the domestic help. We are still probing the case,” Guwahati Police Commissioner Mukesh Agarwal said. For Agarwal, Thursday was the last day as the Police Commissioner as he had been transferred as the Additional DGP in-charge of law and order.
 Agarwal said the motive behind the abduction was definitely to extort money from the doctor couple. “There are some inputs about the gang that tried to hand over the girl to another group. However, preliminary reports indicate that the first group itself would have asked for a huge sum of money for the girl’s release,” he added.

Police said that by luring her with an ice cream, Rumi took the Class II student of DPS, Guwahati, out of the apartment building. About 300 metres away, she then put Adishree in an Ola taxi and drove her out of Guwahati. The girl was reportedly kept in a house at Bamunbari village around 8.30 pm on Thursday.

The fact that the girl was kidnapped by the maid was proved from the building’s CCTV footage, that clearly showed her getting out of the lift and hurriedly taking her out. “We put a large number of police personnel at work who managed to track down the girl along with Rumi Das and two of her accomplices from the house in Bamunbari under Sarthebari police station in Barpeta district around 2.45 am,” Agarwal said.

Police said that the house was owned by one Anowar Ali, a fair-price shop owner. They added that a local gram panchayat member, Danesh Ali, and a local madrasa teacher, Lokman Ali, were also involved in the plan. All three of them have been arrested.

Besides, the police also arrested Nirmal Kalita who accompanied Rumi and Adishree in the taxi to Sarthebari. The girl is believed to have been drugged twice — once inside the taxi and once later with food that she had been served in Anowar Ali’s house.

“Rumi and Nirmal first took the girl to Danesh’s house at Mukalmua village in Nalbari district, about 40 km from Guwahati. After this Danesh, too, boarded the cab that headed towards Bamunbori,” a police officer said. One Pinku Ali, who too was a member of the gang, has been also arrested. The Ola cab driver, however, remained untraced.

My view

1. Today, you cannot believe anyone, especially maid servants;

2. Severe punishments are the need of the hour;

3. Criminals who are asura / demons does not eligible human rights, eliminate them from the earth;

4. Parents duty to ensure the safety of the kids;

5. Today no one gives much importance to character and discipline, this attitude should be changed for the personal  safety
