The 1971- Nagarwala scandal was a fraudulent act in which Rustom Sohrab Nagarwala convinced Ved Prakash Malhotra to withdraw 6 million rupees from the branch of the State Bank of India where he was the head cashier.
1976 | Kuo Oil Deal | During the Emergency, the government-owned Indian Oil Corporation entered a 2.2-cr contract for oil with a company in Hong Kong that turned out to be fictitious, for a kickback.
1987 | Bofors Scandal | The Swedish armaments firm was accused of paying 64 cr as kickbacks to various middlemen including some close to prime minister Rajiv Gandhi to ensure that its gun would be bought by the Indian army.
1992 | Harshad Mehta Scam | Several stock brokers, prominent among them the Big Bull Harshad Mehta, siphoned money from banks to play the stockmarkets. The loss to banks was put at about 5,000 cr.
1996 | JMM Bribery Case | Prime Minister P V Narasimha Rao and cabinet colleague Buta Singh accused of bribing JMM MPs to win a 1993 vote of no-confidence.
1996 | Fodder Scam | Bihar CM Lalu Prasad accused in 950 cr scam that siphoned off funds from Bihar's animal husbandry dept. Lalu was forced to quit .
2001 | Tehelka Sting | Online news portal Tehelka ran a sting to expose murky dealings in defence procurement. Defence minister George Fernandes was forced to resign and senior army officials faced the axe.
2003 | Telgi Scam | Abdul Karim Telgi accused of masterminding a scam involving counterfeit stamp paper and currency estimated to have cost the exchequer 30,000 cr.
2001 | Ketan Parekh Scam | The stockbroker was accused of engineering mayhem on the markets that wiped out over 115,000 cr in March 2001 Parekh was banned from the capital markets for 14 years.
2009 | Satyam Scam | One of India's premier software firms was found to have falsified accounts and diverted money to fund real estate deals. Promoter Ramalinga Raju was arrested and is facing prosecution.
2009 | Madhu Koda Scam | The former Jharkhand CM was arrested on charges of having amassed wealth by handing out mining leases and of having laundered money to the tune of 4,000 cr.
