“I have to do so much work. I have to do so much work.” You should not say like that. The work is yourself only. You yourself are moving, as it were, outside, in the form of activity. Meditation also is only an activity of your own self, which is another way of saying your soul is moving in the form of a concentration. Very difficult to think such things.

The whole world is just meditation only. The entire universe is doing meditation. Everybody is meditating. The sun is meditating, moon is meditating, mountains and rivers are meditating, because meditation is the consciousness of one's own Self. Consciousness of one's own Self, deeply embedded in it, that is meditation.

Meditation does not mean thinking something outside. It is thinking itself only. You find yourself wherever you are. If it is Rishikesh, you are in Rishikesh even now. You need not have to move around. Rishikesh will come here. You need not have to search for things. The things will come here because there is no distance. We are bothered about the distance between one place and another place. That distance is ruled out. The moment consciousness thinks, immediately it is there. That is the power of thought. Immediately it manifests itself, not tomorrow – now, just now. When God thinks, it takes place, and we are also like that only. We are moving towards that condition. We need not be afraid of anything – no fear. Fear is caused by the separation of ourselves from what we see, without actually finding ourselves in that object.

When we meditate, the mind jumps here and there. Why should the mind jump? You have chosen some objective for meditation, and it has been properly chosen with the intention that it is the best of things, and you cannot move away from the best of things because there cannot be anything better than the best; and if it moves to something else, then this 'something else' is the better than the best. There is some confusion in the mind. All right, if the best is not satisfying, there is another thing, so meditate on that. If that also is not satisfying, and it moves to a third thing, meditate on that also. Like that if you go on roving, you will find that you are meditating on the whole universe.

I have no problem. I consider everything is clear, and neat and clean. When you think as God thinks, nobody can harm you. But you should not think like a mortal – a person from Orissa, one from Bombay. You are not from Bombay or anywhere. You are from eternity, the dimensionless existence, and that cannot be shaken by anybody. That 'anybody' is included in that. That which causes the fear is also included in that thing which you are contemplating. You have become the tiger itself, so the tiger will not jump on you. You are the tiger. But it requires very great courage to think like that. And you must have the confidence: “If I need anything, it will come.” “Oh, I am a poor man. I have no money. Nobody cares.” You should not complain like that. “I am not a poor man. The whole universe is my friend. If I want anything, all the planets will come together and serve me here.” That confidence must be there.

But we are faithless. We cannot have faith in even the truth of things. All the ten planets will come here. In the Yoga Vasishtha it is said: “Varuna will inundate your garden, Vayu will sweep your floor, Indra will come and serve you food.” Such a thing is possible. You think it is a story, but it is not like that. When you are hungry, Indra will come. When Yudhisthira prayed to Sun, Sun came down with a pot. Can you imagine such a thing?

You pray to Surya; let us see whether he brings a pot with inexhaustible food in it. It shatters the brain of a human being. We are thinking Surya is so far away. He is touching our nose even now. Distance doesn't exist. Can you imagine? A pot of food, Surya comes down with it and gives.

The Nature of Desire:

Once a desire arises, we cannot forget it. There is complete insistence that things must happen the way we want. As long as we have such desires, it is impossible to gain peace. We cannot even sleep properly because our mind is so riddled with desires, let alone poised enough to gain that great and permanent peace.

Another characteristic of desire is that once we have enjoyed something, we crave for it again and again. If we feel itchy and make the mistake of scratching, we will find that the itching increases. The nature of desire is just like having an itch. Once we start enjoying something, there will be more and more craving and longing for it. We keep planning for those pleasures we have not yet experienced, and then after having enjoyed them, we remember them constantly and crave for them. These are the two main things that tend to disturb us when we sit for meditation or when we go to sleep. Either we continue to plan for the future, or we try to remember our past experiences.

This does not mean that we should not plan anything. It is not the day-to-day planning for our job or profession that we need to give up, but it is the planning for pleasures and remembering them that create agitation in the mind. Therefore, if we give up these two—remembering the past and planning for the future—along with correct understanding, we can experience peace beyond our imagination.

My-ness Causes Sorrow:

Besides desire, the two other obstacles to attainment of peace are the sense of “I-ness” and “my-ness.” The sense of “I-ness” exists with reference to the body and its activities. When I feel that this body is “I,” then I naturally feel that anything belonging to the body is mine. Thereafter if I lose that object I feel sad. The sorrow exists only because I have this “my” sense. Suppose my watch is lost, will you be unhappy? No, but I will be! Suppose I give my watch to you, and then it is lost. Then losing it no longer matters to me because the sense of “my-ness” is no longer with me. As long as there is a sense of possession, the mind suffers agitation. We feel sorrow only at a loss when this sense of “my-ness” is present—when we feel something “belongs” to us.

A businessman who had lost thousands of rupees came to me once for advice. I told him that the nature of business meant profit and loss and he should have equanimity of mind in both profit and loss. He thanked me for the good advice.

After three days, when he came to me, I was upset for having lost ten rupees. He said, “Swamiji, just three days ago when I had lost ten thousand rupees, you advised me to be calm. Now you are upset at the loss of only ten rupees!”

I said, “My dear, the difference is that the ten thousand rupees were yours, but the ten rupees were mine!”

When the idea of “my-ness” is present, we suffer whether the loss is big or small. In the Gita, Lord Krishna says, he who is free from the sense of “my-ness,” has no agitation.

How can we live practically in the world without a sense of “my-ness?” It is not to be taken literally. Suppose someone asks me, “Swamiji, whose watch is this?” I cannot say that I don’t know, I would say that it is mine. There is no harm in saying that as long as I realize that the watch is merely in my keeping. If a teacher says, “He is my disciple.” This does not mean that the teacher has a sense of “my-ness” and therefore will have no peace. There is a practical use of the word “my.” What we must avoid is the feeling of possession and our attachment to objects. For example, when I travel by plane or train, I say, “my seat number is 25A,” but when I reach the destination, I do not try to take the seat with me. I accept it as mine only for the time being, but I immediately relinquish it without a thought when I leave. I do not consider it as absolutely mine. We must understand that the! possessions are only in our temporary keeping. This is how we can live peacefully with people and relatives and all of the objects that we come in contact with. This is why mothers, fathers, sisters, and brothers are all called relatives, not absolutes.

Separateness and Fear:

Now the question arises: How can we give up this ahamkara or ego, because of which we are suffering? There is a very simple exercise to reduce it. Since we have this feeling that we are great—“I did this, I achieved that”—let us note down on paper what the contributing factors were, and how many people helped us to be what we are today.

Suppose I sing well. Now, for me to be a good singer, how many things were necessary? I draw two columns on the paper and note down my contributions against the contributions of others. By comparing the two my ego must disappear. First, to be able to sing I must be alive and this is certainly not my doing. Secondly, I was gifted with a good voice, which is again a gift from God. Next, I received training from my teachers and other musicians; and finally, I was the recipient of great gifts of tolerance and support from family and neighbors who had to listen while I practiced! With such a perspective we can understand that there is not a single thing that we can do or create on our own. I develop the attitude that it is my privilege to serve and delight others; God has blessed me with this voice for that purpose. Abandoning any sense of doership, we become instruments in the hands of the Lord.

The sense of “I-ness” can be given up with the understanding that God gifted us with all our faculties. Nothing is ours; we should love those around us but never with the sense of “my-ness.” Thus, when desires of I-ness, and my-ness (the causes of all our disturbances are not there, we will enjoy peace of mind.

Gaining Peace:

Peace is not gained by any struggle or absence of struggle. It is gained by understanding the nature of what is real. By discovering and realizing the Truth, the wise man becomes peace itself. That is “the peace that passeth all understanding,” that which is beyond our mind and intellect. That peace never gets disturbed. The Gita confirms such a peaceful mind when it says, “Having gained abidance in peace such that even mountain-like sorrows do not disturb one.” This peace is present even while the wise man is working. In this peace the mind is very much alive, awake, alert, vigilant, working, functioning, dealing with life and all its problems and challenges. This is tattva nishtha the determination of the Reality. It is not achieved by running away from life nor when the mind is suspended through laziness or drugs. There is no peace through such means.

The above approach to peace and happiness is the path of inquiry. But there is another approach, the path of devotion. One who is devoted to the Lord and has faith that an almighty, omnipresent, omnipotent Lord is taking care of everything, has no reason to get agitated.

Generally, we think that he who does not believe in the existence of God is an atheist. This is not true. He who believes in the existence of God and still says, “I am not peaceful” is really an atheist. He believes in the great Lord, and at the same time he is worried! What kind of belief is that? If I have firm faith that the Lord is there to take care of everything, that He has given me power, ability, and my work is only to serve Him, then I have no agitation. Then I am indeed on the path of devotion.

The third way to attain peace of mind is through the path of dharma (righteousness). When something that has to be done is not done, or we do something that we should not be doing, there is agitation. If a child does not do his homework, he will be fearful of the teacher’s wrath. This applies to us also. If something is left unfinished, we will always be agitated by the thought of it. Only when we do the work will we be at peace. Therefore, if one performs all of one’s obligatory duties and stays away from prohibited actions, then one is never agitated. For one who follows the path of dharma, there is no fear.

If one can follow any one of the paths, he will surely attain peace. If one does not have an inquiring, analyzing intellect, it is all right. He can have simple faith; the Lord will take care of everything. Without faith, even a householder’s life becomes miserable. If partners have distrust between them, there will be disharmony. Where there is faith there is peace.

Peace is the true nature of the mind, not agitation. That is why when agitation is there, we want to go back to a state of peace. We ourselves are creating the causes for agitation, which are desires, cravings, I-ness, my-ness, lack of faith, and non-performance of our duties. If we put forth effort to remove these causal factors of agitation, we will have true peace of mind.

Worship of the Guru: 

Swami Krishnananda

Blessed be the holy Sri Vyasa Purnima, holy Sri Guruji. The full moon of the presence of the Guru is what we are adoring at this moment and are devoted to in our own hearts. This is the day especially devoted to the Lord in the form of Sri Vyasa, who is the Guru of Gurus, the Sakshat Incarnation, an Avatara of Bhagavan Sriman Narayana Himself. Within this great Guru of Gurus, all the Gurus find themselves an abode. They get merged in this Master, Guru Sri Krishna Dvaipayana Vyasa. This is the occasion to worship the great spiritual Master, Sri Swami Sivanandaji Maharaj, our worshipful great Master. This is the occasion when we invoke into ourselves the presence of all the saints and sages of all countries, of all times, into our own hearts. Blessings, therefore, are poured into us by this magnificent spiritual invocation.

The contemplation of the Guru is the art that the disciple has to learn. This art applies to any other form of meditation applicable to anything and everything in the world. Invocation is the placement of the deity in our own being. This is something to be emphasised again and again. The divinity that we are adoring is above us, of course. That is why we worship it. If it is equal to us or parallel with us, we would not worship it. One person does not worship another person. The worship is offered to that being which is superior to one's own self. The superiority consists not in an ordinarily conceived fashion of importance.

Here the technique of yoga comes to our aid. Every form of true worship or adoration is a yoga par excellence. The yoga consists in the placement of a higher value in our own selves so that the higher takes possession of us, and for the time being there is a moment of meditation. We ourselves get transformed into the higher divinity which enters us, takes possession of us, seeps into ourselves, and becomes our Master so that it guides us through our avenues of understanding. This is the vision of a yogi.

We often think that there are many Gurus. The world has seen a multiple number of Masters who have come and gone. Inasmuch as the Guru is one who leads us to eternal existence, the Guru cannot pass away. That which passes away cannot lead us to eternal existence. Only eternity can lead us to eternity where the means and the end are of the same character, as the lower cannot lead us to the higher. It is the element of the higher present in our own selves that picks up the power to raise us to the level of that which we are adoring. Thus, we adore them even if they are no more in this world; we adore them even after they have departed from this world. Do we not keep their portrait, adore them, worship them, remember them and make them our own, though they are not in this world? We are worshiping them in the very spirit in which they were living even when they were visible to our eyes. A dead father is no father. A living father is the father. So who is the father? The living principle is the father. The being that is about to leave this world cannot be identified with the living principle.

We, therefore, have to consider the presence of this living principle in each and every thing in this world, and as the living principle does not die, the Guru also cannot die. We need not shed tears because our Guru is no more. That which is no more is not our Guru. It is that which was present at that time, and is present now, and will be always present, that is our Guru. Remember always, perishable objects cannot bestow upon us imperishable existence. Therefore, our Guru lives in the form of a force that is immanent in all things. If in this way we visualise things, we will find there is nothing in this world which cannot be regarded as our teacher. Everything is implanted with a higher power beyond itself. Everything, anything anywhere, is of that nature. So we can summon the assistance of anything even in this physical world, provided we adore each and every being in this world as our Guru.

Remember the great Master Dattatreya's statement in his description of his Gurus: Everything, all things, living beings and non-living beings, temporal things, spiritual things, these were the Gurus of Master Dattatreya because the Guru is that which is immanently present in all things, in ourselves included. Can we suggest to our own selves a method of bringing into a focus of attention these admonitions of yoga practice, and deeply contemplate the Guru that is present everywhere? They say Narayana is the Adi Guru. From him comes Brahma the creator, who is the next state of the Guru. All that Brahma produced as the first creation becomes the third state of the Guru. According to the tradition into which we have been introduced, Vasishtha was the firstborn of Brahma the creator, so Vasishtha is our Guru. Vasishtha's progeny was a great Master called Shakti. He also is our Guru, and his progeny Parashara is our Guru. Parashara's progeny, Krishna Dvaipayana Vyasa, is our Guru. Suka is our Guru, Gaurapada is our Guru, Govindapada is our Guru, Sankaracharya is our Guru, Ramanuja is our Guru, Madhvacharya is our Guru. In this way, we bring into focus a fraternity of Masters pervading all places—not dead ones, but living ones. Here they are before us in the manner suggested, regarding them as a transcendent principle, not an outward object. In this manner the Guru is to be adored and worshipped. In this manner one contemplates the great Master. He not only becomes our teacher, he becomes our daily mentor, a guide in our day-to-day existence.

We need not, therefore, be in a state of despair. We are perfectly protected always, day in and day out, from moment to moment, by the leaf of a tree, by the sun that shines, by everything and anything, even by the sky. We are protected always, blessed always from moment to moment. Blessings inundate our existence. We have the grace of Worshipful Guru Swami Sivananda Maharaj. May he bless us forever.

12. Ahimsa: Non-injury is our highest virtue (Ahimsa Paramo Dharmah). Compassion is a divine quality. Protection of animals is our sacred duty. This is India’s special teaching. Let us be compassionate towards all creatures. Thus, be a true Indian. Try to become an embodiment of kindness compassion and goodness in your everyday life.
